Leonard Pierce on blockbuster bully culture. →

He makes a ton of good points here, but what I can’t get over is the video embedded in the post. I’m guessing Paramount didn’t pay those people to make that ad for their movie. And, despite (or perhaps because of) its use of what Pierce calls “hipster strawmen,” it’s pretty damn effective.

Wilfred.
I’m still not sure what to make of it.
On the one hand, it’s a pretty brilliant piece of absurdism, Elijah Wood was great in the premiere and they managed to get two seasons out of the premise in Australia.
On the other hand, the high concept seems like something Mr. Show would work knock out in a three-minute sketch. How many “he’s a dog but he’s also a...
About this week's "Louie."
(Image via.)
“Louie” is a show that does an amazing thing, in that it shifts from slice-of-life, observational comedy to poignant, philosophical think pieces about urban existence to, occasionally, fever-dream surrealism without being a complete mess.
Last season had some real masterpieces, particularly the episodes “Bully” and “God,” both of which...

Four Lions is funny until it isn't.
Chris Morris’ Four Lions, which Morris co-wrote with Peep Show creators Jesse Armtstrong and Sam Bain, seems more incendiary than it is. Its premise—a group of Muslim terrorists living in Sheffield train for, then try to carry out, a suicide attack—make it sound like an all-purpose offender. People who don’t like making light of national security (in the United States and...
Rockstar makes diner games.
From a chat between myself and Ken Lowery:
Ken: I love Rockstar because they continue to behave as if they read, watch and take in culture other than video games and movie soundtracks. No one is making the kinds of games they are, with the subject matter they go for.
me: Yeah, they make games about people other than space marines or real marines, which puts them above 80 percent of game...

For those that are completely unaware here’s the 411: I’ve been unemployed for a year, and it has been a pretty low point in my life. Not to go all livejournal here, but I finally figured out a way out of this shitty life, into a far cooler, more interesting life.
I am going to move to Chicago…
SNL's problem.
NOTE: I started writing this post like a month ago. Then stuff blew up crazy and I got engaged and other stuff, and I sort of forgot about Tumblr. Now I’m going to try to actually update some. So enjoy these weeks-old observations.
I’m not the most regular viewer of Saturday Night Live, but I occasionally catch it on TV or watch it on Hulu if I like the host or I just happen to...
