DC #1's, final week.
So let’s see. The first (full) week of number-one issues was a study in highs and lows. The second was mostly average. Last week displayed a wide gulf in quality. Will this week continue the pattern? Pretty much, yeah.
All-Star Western #1: If nothing else, this book looks pretty great. Moritat’s art does a great job of establishing the frontier-Gotham setting. The plot is…well,...

Why what DC does matters.
Skim the 1,600+ comments on Laura Hudson’s article at Comics Alliance about how this week’s Catwoman and Red Hood and the Outlaws comics included an off-putting presentation of female characters, and you’ll see quite a few like this one:
Now, I can’t speak for Laura Hudson or Comics Alliance, but I have a pretty good idea why these two comics are getting so much...

NBC Thursday night.
Last night I was very excited to see NBC’s Thursday night comedies return to the air (sans 30 Rock, which shifted to midseason because of the Feybaby). How’d they fare? Let’s just see.
(Warning: Spoilers for the shows ahead if you haven’t watched ‘em yet.)
Community: Somewhere along the line, The Simpsons started taking heat for its inclusion of improbable guest...

DC #1s, week four.
Unlike last week’s slate of average, this week’s books were a study in extremes.
Batman #1: A little bit of a step down from Scott Snyder’s superlative work on Detective Comics, but still a nicely put-together start to what could be a neat mystery/conspiracy story. Certainly the best of the Bat-books so far, even with Greg Capullo’s weird, sort of lumpy/cartoony art.

DC #1s, week two. (Or is it three?)
I noticed a pattern in this week’s books. See if you can spot it in these mini reviews.
Batman and Robin #1: It was OK. New, mysterious villain that kills some dude. Bruce and Damian talking at each other rather than talking to each other. A neat fight sequence. Some vague stuff about nuclear rods.
Batwoman #1: Gorgeous art, but I think we were all anticipating that. The story is, well, is...

You guys, hold on. Wait. This whole thing is really, really terrible....

The New 52 comics I did like.
I’ve done a lot of criticizing of DC’s relaunch titles here, but there were some books that came out yesterday I definitely did like a lot.
Animal Man #1
Didn’t go at a breakneck pace, but for a title like this one, unlike Justice League, I think it’s fine to have some room to breathe. Writer Jeff Lemire is clearly trying to establish a dark, creepy mood, and boy does...
Detective Comics #1.
Rarely have I ever had as much to say about a single issue of a comic book.
Or so little. All I’d really need to tell you is that this comic was terrible. Among the worst I have ever read. And I’ve read my share of Ron Zimmerman comics. Deep down in my heart, that’s kind of all I want or need to say.
But it’s fascinatingly terrible, and I feel like that should be...
