    That would have to be the emergence of the gaffe as the only political story that seems to matter anymore. There’s plenty of substantive discussion to be had about any number of issues, and I’m not just talking about the presidential race here. And yet, the stories that get all kinds of traction are the ones in which someone just slips up and says something he/she almost certainly didn’t mean.

    It’s just plain gotchaism, and while it may be entertaining, it doesn’t really mean much in the long run. I mean, I get it. The audience eats this stuff up because politics are sports now, and anything that can give their guy advantage over the other guy in the next Facebook debate is red meat for them. But it sure does drown out the real stuff, doesn’t it?
